Today was tree pruning day. We have to keep reminding ourselves why we prune the trees - whether it's to encourage branch growth or to encourage fruiting, to facilitate easy picking, or for shaping or just to keep it confined -- space-wise, that is.

Anyhow, while fruit tree pruning is, we think, done for the year we're keeping our tools handy in case we see something we overlooked. The pruning stick will be packed away within about a month. The loppers and shears will stay available for the summer of course. There's alwyas some form of destruction in which one wants to participate when you have fun tools to play with. Besides, some time this week when it's not raining we'll have to go out and trim back the raspberries.

Naturally, it's a bit muddy out on the lawn and the snow next to the road is nice and brown

Whle the stuff on the boulevard is, as expected, pretty dirty the snow left on the lawn is almost surprisingly white. There sure is plenty of ice under the snow so we hacked some of the ice away to free the lower branches of the peach tree.

We bought a challah from Sobeys the other day. It was a small one which costed $3.00. With the rising price of flour, buying bread gets even nuttier (and not in a good way) - particularly considering the quality. We buy unbleached white and organic whole wheat so, from the outset, we think our home made breads are healthier (or at least less unhealthy). I pushes us to bake more for ourselves and this weekend was french bread time.

Gas ovens are just marvelous for baking!
